The Tucson Police Department is in a legitimate staffing crisis. Most people would describe the the department as negligently staffed.
As a taxpayer, a registered voter, and a citizen living in the City of Tucson, I had a very tough time coming to the decision to put my humble opinion, regarding the Tucson Police Department and it's inability to recruit and retain enough quality people to protect it's citizens, on the website.
In this investigation, I will lay out some of the issues that personnel, specifically street cops, are dealing with at the Tucson Police Department. In the end, if you're considering a career in law enforcement, you'll realize it could be the best job in the world, but you do NOT want to do it in Tucson. Make this police department in a failed city fix some things before they EARN your application.
**STAY TUNED!! WE ARE JUST GETTING STARTED!!**
Nope! You'll never stop hearing about how grateful the "leadership" is of their patrol cops. After all, "patrol is the backbone of the police work!"
Sadly, the fact of the matter is, the "leadership" never misses an opportunity to take a crap on patrol.
Think about this for a second, no matter how short patrol is, at this point we are hundreds of cops short, the department will ALWAYS have a fully staffed Executive Leadership Team (The 2nd Floor). You can also count on having a fully staffed command staff (lieutenants and captains). Patrol gets screwed again and again...
Patrol is also the place where you walk into a situation where you have no information except for what is given to you in the call text which may or may not be accurate. Then, you will be judged by the split second decisions you make by people who will take days, if not weeks to critique your decisions.
